Bob Alpers, PE
Principal

Bob’s 35 years in the commissioning, energy conservation and building automation business have given him a deep and rich appreciation of the challenges facing the world as the need for energy impacts our environment.

After taking an engineering degree at The Ohio State University, he entered America’s just-emerging computerized building automation industry and began selling high-end computer based control systems for large hospitals, institutional and military facilities in Colorado including NORAD and US Air Force Academy, Swedish Medical Center and Colorado School of Mines.  It wasn’t long before Bob transitioned from control systems to energy consulting and, eventually, and in 1981 acquired his professional engineer’s license and became a principal and part owner at one of Denver’s leading mechanical/electrical and energy consulting firms, The RMH Group.

From the start Bob’s special passion has been conserving the environment . In fact, his studies in college focused on all aspects of environmental resource conservation engineering.

Shortly after relocating to San Diego in 1994 to take on a position as VP of Marketing & Development for a large Swiss Controls Manufacturer, Bob saw an opportunity to get back into energy consulting and shifted his career path to building commissioning. Although commissioning was a relatively unknown to the building industry at that time, Bob decided to learn the process in order to contribute to the war against global warming. Bob as part of a team of engineers began his tutelage by helping commission the new John Paul Getty museum in Los Angeles. This is where he first cut his teeth on commission, testing the performance of the complex mechanical and electrical systems that maintained the delicate climate for  the 1 million square foot world class art museum.  Now almost 20 years later Bob is been involved in commissioning hundreds of buildings including over 25 LEED certified facilities such as El Cajon Public Safety Center,, Cedars Sinai Advanced Science Research Center, Scripps Hospital, San Jose State University and California Institute of Technology.

Bob now oversees his own consulting firm located San Diego and hopes to continue his work with his team to provide commissioning and engineering improving energy efficiency of new and existing buildings.
